Spiders & Circles!

Today we had a wonderful guest come to our school to teach us about different types of Arachnids, especially spiders! He did one grade at a time, so my 4th graders had him all to themselves, which meant that they got a very hands-on experience!
He brought out several different kinds of tarantulas, and he talked about the differences between each of them.
He even set them down on the ground so we could compare how they looked and moved. The one out front was a quick one… look at all my kiddos’ legs up on the chairs!! ha! This was before they learned that spiders don’t like to bite humans… just their food! By the end they were {almost} all begging to hold one!

The Pink Toed Tarantulas have very sticky feet, which he demonstrated by having one crawl up the wall. Then, since they live in tress, he had one of my brave, sweet students help with his demonstration! See it climbing up his sweatshirt?!
Some other fun arachnids:
And this sweet little guy was the inspiration for our math lesson! These guys are sometimes referred to as Halloween spiders because of their orange & black coloring… perfect!

And here is our version of our new arachnid friend:

You may recall the circle tree that we made last year when learning about circles. Well, with our new math curriculum, it is taught earlier in the year now, which couldn’t have been more perfect!
First, they drew a 6 in. circle and a 4 in. circle using a compass. Then they used a ruler and a white colored pencil to draw and label the center, diameter, and radius.

I was only going to have them label the “abdomen,” but some of my early finishers went ahead and labeled the “cephalothorax” as well! Love it!
Then they added the legs (rectangles) and fangs (triangles), as well as orange stripes!
Tada!

I told my kiddos that now that they know all about spiders they can ‘rescue’ them for me when we find them in our classroom! Yikes!
