I have used the Spelling City Premium membership for the past couple years and it has been such an amazing resource for both me and my students! Today I wanted to share one of the new(er) features of the premium membership… Review Lists!
A LITTLE BACKGROUND ON SPELLING IN MY CLASSROOM:
I use Words Their Way to assess and group my students based on their spelling needs and it has been so much more effective for my students than just giving them all the same list! I have my students in 4 different spelling groups and each group is working with different words that are at their levels. One thing that I have always struggled with in terms of spelling though is assigning my students review lists to practice words that they have previously had but struggled with. In a perfect world I would be able to have individualized lists for each student with the words that they needed to review most, but who has time to go through student spelling tests one by one, write down words they missed, and create a review list from the past several tests?
Well, now I don’t have to worry about that any more because Spelling City added an INCREDIBLE new feature that does just that! I’ve laid out the steps so you can see just how simple it is to generate individual review lists for each of your students!
6 SIMPLE STEPS FOR CREATING REVIEW LISTS:
Group by group you can go through your previously administered spelling lists and select which you want to have them review words from. It will determine which words each student missed and combine them all in personalized list for each student!
Of course, you can create a single class review list with the same words for each student, however I think the individual lists are the most beneficial!
I get this notification because I have my students in different spelling groups, so they only have test data for the spelling group that they are in. If you have your whole class doing the same list, then you can skip this step and step #6!
This step allows you to choose how many words you want your students to have for their review lists! If a student has missed fewer words than the number of words you select, then “filler” words will be filled in randomly. This is a great way to make sure that they are reviewing spelling words, even if they didn’t miss them the first time around!
Like I mentioned before, I have my students in 4 different groups, so when I create review lists for my “Within Word” group, it generates lists for all students in the class based on those lists. I simple go through the lists and delete the lists for all students not in the “Within Word” group. Repeat this step for all groups!
And that is it! On Monday I have my students log into their accounts to write their review words down in their planner (so I don’t have to print out individual lists for each child), and then they practice them throughout the week! On Friday they log in to take their tests and they all have individual review lists tailored to their needs and the words they need extra practice with!
I am absolutely in love with this new feature of Spelling City! This is something that I would not have been able to manage doing if it wasn’t for them!
